GROW ROOM ENVIRONMENT

The Conditions Your Microgreens Need To Thrive

SPACE:

A grow rack is 48" wide x 18" deep so you don't need much space to get started. You can even start with a 48" shelf instead of a rack and grow 4 trays/week. I have 5 grow racks, 1 germination rack, a dehumidifier, air conditioner, refrigerator, and my computer in a 12' x 16' room and can grow up to 100 trays/week in this space. I also have a separate seeding/harvesting room that is 5' x 8'.

TEMPERATURE:

It is ideal to maintain a temperature in your grow room between 65 - 75 F with a temperature difference between day and night of up to 10 F. Your grow lights will produce heat during the day helping to naturally provide this temperature swing. Temperatures outside of this range can lead to poor growth and lower yields for many microgreen varieties. More lights mean more heat so as you add racks, you may need additional air conditioning in your grow room.

RELATIVE HUMIDITY:

Aim for between 50 - 65% relative humidity. Once humidity gets above 70%, you can start to experience problems with mold and poor growth, and below 40%, evaporation happens too quickly which leads to slow growth, plant stress, poorer quality, and lower yields. In most cases you will be dealing with humidity levels that are too high, so you may need to add a dehumidifier to your grow room maintain proper humidity levels.

AIRFLOW:

Provide gentle airflow throughout your grow room to encourage evaporation, provide a consistent temperature, and help prevent mold growth. A decent pedestal fan is sufficient in most cases.

INSECT CONTROL:

Use an indoor electric bug zapper in your grow room to control flying insects. This is often overlooked but if you grow long enough indoors, you will eventually have a problem with some type of flying insect if you don't have some form of control. An indoor bug zapper works perfectly.
